According to recent surveys, more than 70% of Americans play video games in some form or fashion. Most people only play video games casually, either on a console or on their smartphone. But there are some people who spend long hours playing the games of their choice. For these people, lower back pain is a common problem. It sort of comes with the territory when you get into the habit of sitting in front of a screen for hours (and hours!) on end. Have you found that your love for gaming has led to you dealing with a lot of lower back pain? If so, you should take steps to get immediate access to back pain relief.

From investing in a great gaming chair to giving yourself a break from gaming every so often, there are things you can do to stop video games from being one of your biggest lower back pain causes. Here are seven things you can do to stop back pain from plaguing you.

1. Buy a Great Gaming Chair

Back in the day, most gamers used to be able to get away with sitting on a beanbag chair or, in some cases, even just on the ground while playing video games. But in this day and age, it’s almost impossible to do this without experiencing at least some lower back pain.

If you consider yourself to be a serious gamer, you should 100% invest in a great gaming chair for your gaming sessions. There are so many excellent options out there for you to choose from nowadays.

Gaming chairs look a lot like regular office chairs at first glance. But the best gaming chairs in the business have so much more to offer than your average gaming chair.

A good gaming chair will offer support for everything from your back and neck to your hips and arms. It’ll keep your spine in constant alignment so that you can focus on gaming and not the pain that often comes along with gaming in a regular office chair.

2. Stick a Comfortable Seat Cushion on Your Gaming Chair

When you’re playing video games, you’re probably always looking for ways to take things to the next level, right? So, why not take that same exact approach when it comes to your gaming chair?

Your gaming chair is going to be plenty comfortable in and of itself. But you can level up by sticking a comfortable coccyx cushion on it for you to sit down on. For those who don’t know what the coccyx is, it’s your tailbone—and it can get very sore if you sit on it for a long enough time.

The second that you start to slouch and practice poor posture, you’re going to find that lower back pain will begin to set in. It’s why it’s so essential for you to keep good posture in the back of your mind every time you sit down to start gaming.

4. Get Up Out of Your Gaming Chair Every So Often and Go for a Walk

As long as you practice good posture while gaming, you shouldn’t have to worry too much about lower back pain setting in. Your posture will keep your back relaxed and prevent it from getting too tight on you at any point.

That being said, it’s going to be pretty much impossible for you to steer clear of lower back pain if you stay seated for hours at a time. Your back—and the rest of your body—will only be able to take so much sitting down.

About once every 30 to 60 minutes, you should make it your mission to stand up out of your chair and walk around for at least a few minutes. This will get the blood circulating throughout your body and loosen up all the muscles in it.

You should even consider going outside for a few minutes to breathe in some fresh air for a few minutes. This can work wonders for both your physical and your mental health and make you feel so much better. It’ll also give you a chance to refocus so that you improve your skills on the sticks.

5. Stretch Your Back Out in Between Gaming Sessions

Do you find that your lower back seems to get tight regardless of what you do to try and stop it from happening? There will be times when you’ll sit for longer than you may have intended and experience lower back pain as a result of it.

When this occurs, it’s a good idea to try out a few back stretches to loosen your back up again. Doing some light stretching for even just five or ten minutes could really make a big difference as far as your back pain is concerned.

These stretches can really benefit anyone, even if they don’t engage in gaming on a regular basis. But they can be especially beneficial for those people who find themselves sitting in front of a screen more often than not each day.

There are dozens and dozens of back pain solutions out there that people can try when experiencing lower back pain. If you haven’t given them a whirl yet, you should pick up a few of them and see whether or not they work well for you.

A simple heating pad has been the go-to back pain solution for many people for years now. But you might want to also think about trying things like:

  • Back pain gels, creams, and lotions
  • CBD oil for back pain
  • Kinesiology tape
  • Foam rollers

When used in conjunction with light stretching, all of these back pain solutions can zap your lower back pain for good and make it go away. You’ll wonder why you didn’t try them so much sooner when they feel the back pain relief that they provide.

7. Take a Day (or Two!) Off From Gaming Every Now and Then

Studies have indicated that the average American gamer spends roughly 7 hours gaming each week. That number isn’t that high when you think about it and shouldn’t result in too much lower back pain for a person, as long as they don’t cram all 7 hours into a single day.

There are, however, some gamers who go above and beyond gaming just 7 hours a week. They’ll routinely game for 20, 30, 40, or even 50 hours (or more!) every week, which will no doubt put a huge strain on their lower back, not to mention every other part of their body.

If you’re a hardcore gamer who just can’t get enough of gaming, you need (emphasis on need!) to give your body a break every now and then. You should try to put down the controller at least once each week to give your body a full day of rest.

If you don’t do this, you’re going to be asking for trouble. It won’t be too long at all before lower back pain is a part of your normal routine.

At that point, you might need to speak with a doctor about what to do next. Your back pain isn’t going to go away with some simple stretches and back pain solutions anymore.

Gaming is supposed to be fun, not painful. It’s why you need to make every effort to stop lower back pain from ruining your gaming experiences from now on.
