TikTok a well-known social network has been banned by the Indian Government last morning, along with 58 other apps. Some other banned apps are also popular such as Shareit, WeChat, and UC Browser. All these apps are of Chinese origin which is quite shocking.

According to the Indian government, all these apps are harmful to the sovereignty and honor of India, the state’s security, and the Indian defence.

According to a release from the Ministry of Electronics and IT, all the apps are blocked under the provisions of Section 69 of the IT Act, as well as provisions of the IT rules 2008, stating, “in view of the information available they are engaged in activities which are [sic] prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, the security of the state and public order.”

Banned Apps

All these banned apps are quite popular and they have a large market share in India including TikTok which arguably is the most used app in India and it is popular among all ages. Likee and Helo app also fall under the category of TikTok, because both are social networks, but their market share is nothing compare to TikTok. Other banned apps include Shareit and ES File Explorer, which are used to manage and transfer files. A well-known strategy game Clash of Kings has also been banned. An online apparel retailer Shein is also banned and popular web browser UC Browser is also banned by the Indian government.

The ministry has also ordered Google and Apple to ban these 59 apps in 24 hours.

In the release, MEITY states, “The Ministry of Information Technology has received many complaints from various sources including several reports about misuse of some mobile apps available on Android and iOS platforms for stealing and surreptitiously transmitting users’ data in an unauthorised manner to servers which have locations outside India. The compilation of these data, its mining and profiling by elements hostile to national security and defence of India, is a matter of very deep and immediate concern.”

As for TikTok, the app was already in news for “snooping” on user’s clipboards, which was revealed by the iOS 14 update which is still in beta mode for developers.

History

In the past, the USA accused TikTok of stealing user data and send it to China, but TikTok is not the only app in this, and neither are Chinese-origin apps.

We have seen the biggest data scandals of our times when Cambridge Analytica used Facebook user data to affect political campaigns.

According to some reports, the Indian Ministry of Electronics and IT has also asked the Department of Telecommunications to order telecom and internet service providers to block access to these apps, that is how the apps could be made to stop working.

This did not happen to TikTok first time in India – the app was removed from the google and app store before – but then it was restored. After a few months, TikTok and Helo both apps faced a ban over “anti-national activities”.

In our opinion the current ban is indirectly connected to the conflict between China and India, therefore, it is unlikely to get resolved soon as in the past. Make in India movement is growing in the country and Anti-China sentiments made Oppo reconsider holding a live launch for its latest phone in the country.

As highlighted by the Congress leaders on Sunday, many banned app companies donated to thee PM Cares fund. TikTok donated Rs. 30 Crores to the fund, Xiaomi, which has two banned apps on the list donated Rs. 15 Crores.
